OUR MISSION STATEMENT“It is the mission of Mount Olive Baptist Church to effectively minister the word of God to the people of God through teaching, preaching, and outreach. We believe that we are called to address the needs of the total person, as our Savior did, and strive to lift the name of Jesus in our community and the world in which we live through our commitment of praise, worship, stewardship, evangelism, and economic development.” HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR CHURCH HISTORYEstablished in 1885 Mount Olive Baptist Church celebrates 125 years of Christian Service. The rich history of this great church is due to the hard work, dedication and total commitment to the advancement of Christianity from our founding Fathers and Mothers. We gratefully acknowledge their achievements through these highlights in our church history: On March 11, 1885, the Reverend One of the first church buildings was wood framed, and erected during the pastorate of Dr. E. J. Fisher. Sometime after 1920, during the pastorate of Dr. E. J. Nabrit, a brick edifice was erected. On July 11, 1954, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Mount Olive Baptist Church, at the corner of (then)Gordon Road and Barfield Avenue. On a warm summer day, August 28, 1955, Reverend W.W. Weatherspool led a motorcade from the old church to the new church edifice. This marked the beginning of worship in our present location. There are many points of historical significance in this church. The steps leading up to the Sanctuary are in three parts, and they are known as the “Zion Steps of the Zion Way,” which leads up to the first vestibule of the subway entrance. The first threshold upon entering the church is where history is planted. A brick, a piece of metal, and stones brought from around the world by Dr. W. W. Weatherspool can be found planted there. Above the entrance door of the church, seven Etowah Stones are placed in the wall. They represent the Seven Churches of Asia Minor. To the left upon entering the church are three large Etowah Stones, representing – Abraham (top), Isaac (left), and Jacob (right). Underneath these stones, are gray bronze Etowah Stones, which represent the Jacob family, with Benjamin, who is the baby of the family, at the bottom. To the right, upon entering the church, are twelve white Etowah Stones, which represent the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ. The late Dr. W.W. Weatherspool, a past visionary of Mount Olive once stated, “This church is covered and colored with glorious achievements of God fearing folk who have made their contributions to a growing civilization, and in advancing church life among the sons and daughters of men.” Now, under the leadership of our present Pastor, the Reverend Jimmy R. Gibson, Sr., Mount Olive Baptist Church will continue to make a Kingdom difference in the city of Atlanta by embracing the vision of the Great Commission to go out and win lost souls to the Glory of God! |
